European Credit Transfer System

ECTS (European Credit Transfer System)

ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) is an educational credit system that makes it possible to compare the workload of an educational component at a higher education institution.

The ECTS system was created and is used in EU countries as well as in other countries participating in the Bologna Process, which aims to create a common European Higher Education Area where students and researchers can move freely across borders. ECTS is therefore part of, and supports, EU citizens’ right to free mobility within the internal market.

In your programme regulations, ECTS describes the workload associated with subjects, modules, and semesters (educational components). In fulltime programmes, ECTS credits correspond to an average total workload of 43 hours per week. ECTS does not indicate difficulty level, academic standard, or number of teaching hours.

One semester corresponds to 30 ECTS.
